USED CAR BUYING GUIDE: KENYA

Everything to check before your money moves.

The Kenyan used-car market rewards the informed and punishes the rushed. Between imports, locally used units and freshly assembled stock, prices for the same car can vary hugely — and so can their true condition. This is the process we walk every consultancy client through.

Step 1: Price the market, not the advert

Check several listings of the same year, trim and mileage before judging any single price. A car priced far below its peers is not a bargain — it is a question. Consider total cost of ownership: import duty status, service history, tyre condition and pending maintenance all move the real price by tens of thousands.

Step 2: Verify the documents

Confirm the logbook matches the seller's ID, check for outstanding finance, and confirm the chassis and engine numbers physically match the paperwork. Import records should show the consignment and duty paid. We verify documents as a standalone service if you want certainty before a viewing.

Step 3: Inspect before you offer

  • Engine: cold start, oil condition, leaks, smoke colour.
  • Underbody and suspension: bushings, shocks, rust on imports from coastal regions.
  • Electronics: every switch, the AC, infotainment, warning lights after startup.
  • Panel gaps and paint: uneven gaps and overspray tell the accident history the seller will not.
  • Road test: alignment pull, brake bite, transmission behaviour cold and warm.

Step 4: Negotiate on facts

An inspection report is your strongest negotiation tool. Documented issues with repair estimates turn "the price is firm" into a real discount — typically far more than the inspection costs. Never let enthusiasm for the car do the seller's negotiation for them.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to buy an import or a locally used car?

A well-kept local unit with a full history is often safer than a mystery import. Condition and documentation matter more than origin.

How much should I budget for an inspection?

A professional pre-purchase inspection costs a small fraction of the repair bill it prevents — see our inspection service for current pricing.

Can you negotiate the price for me?

Yes — our consultancy clients get market pricing guidance and negotiation support based on documented inspection findings.
